Did you know that nearly 300,000 native Puerto Ricans live in and around Orlando? Learn why Central Florida has become the political and social frontier for Puerto Ricans. Examine the factors that drove these people from their home country, as well as from the northeast U.S. to settle in Orlando and neighboring communities – including better job opportunities, better schools, less crime, and proximity to Puerto Rico. Discover the innovative ways that they assimilated into the community while still holding onto their cultural traditions. Born in Havana, Cuba, Luis Martínez-Fernández grew up in Lima, Peru, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. A graduate of the University of Puerto Rico, Dr. Martínez-Fernández received his Ph.D. from Duke University. Currently a history professor at the University of Central Florida, he has written four books and often serves as an expert in the media on topics pertaining to Hispanic/Latino history and culture. 7-8:30 p.m. Snacks provided.
