Technology is continually changing. Accordingly, computers have become an essential part of everyday living. Things such as paper phone books, and maps have been replaced with Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and electronic tablets. Looking for that new restaurant? Perhaps that new hit music single or shoes. Maybe your trying to locate that old friend. How about that news or weather update. It's simple. Google It!
While technology has become a magnificent tool of convenience to most, it can double as a great danger to an individual in an abusive relationship. Many abused individuals try to utilize technology as a means to gain information to escape a bad relationship. The ever changing element of technology can be used to jeopardize a victims safety. I want to congratulate anyone who has the courage and strength to take the steps to leave an abusive relationship.
***Please remember your safety is the number one concern.***
Anytime you want to access information on domestic violence it is important you do so on a "safe computer". A safe computer is one your abuser does not have direct or indirect access to. You can access a safe computer in a local library, internet cafe',or a trusted friends home.***please avoid using computers that ask for personal information, like your driver's license or credit card information.***
Other precautions that should be utilized as well when accessing information on domestic violence such as:
Unfortunately, your abuser does not have to have the education of an IT programmer to monitor your computer usage. Items such as spyware and other hacking tools are readily available everywhere. Many people think if you delete a file or history that everything is erased. Unfortunately, that is not true. It is impossible to clear all of the "footprints" of your online activities. If you believe your activities are monitored, I advise you please be wise in your activity. Again, your safety is number 1! You do not want to perform anything unusual to trigger your abuser. Be Smart! Continue to use the monitored device as you normally would such as checking news updates and weather. Revert to a safer computer to compile your safety plan.( ie: pricing bus tickets, apartments, or jobs)
All in all technology can be a powerful tool for someone attempting to escape a violent relationship. The key is you have to be smart when using it. If you are unsure if you are being monitored it is best to call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE TTY 1-800-787-3224 for information.
