Candidate for St. Petersburg, FL City Council

Inspiration: The students with whom I work. They often have every imaginable disadvantage, but still rise to do great things.

Biggest Challenge: Growing up poor.

Proudest Moment: Earning my Master of Social Work degree.

Biggest Victory: Lobbying for several years and then seeing Florida finally pass anti-bullying legislation.

Steve Kornell is one of those Floridians who decided to stand up and change the status quo in his own backyard. And now he needs our help.

Steve's a leader in St. Petersburg, where he's running for a seat on the city council. He's worked arm-in-arm with community leaders there for more than 23 years, particularly on issues that affect the city's youth. Steve got his Masters degree in social work, and is currently a social worker at area public schools. He's also worked closely with Equality Florida to get anti-bullying policies enacted so that LGBT students don't have to be afraid to go to school.

If Steve wins his victory will be seen as another step towards equality in a state that seriously lags behind its peers. But it will also mean St. Petersburg will benefit from a dedicated, committed and caring local leader who happens to be gay. That will be another powerful signal to state leaders that fairness matters to Florida's voters.
